Spokane crime statistics report an overall downward trend in crime based on data from 11 years with violent crime decreasing and property crime decreasing. Based on this trend, the crime rate in Spokane for 2012 is expected to be lower than in 2009.
SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. - Four murders this year 2012 in Spokane County. Four killers on the loose. Now major crimes detectives think they found at least one of them.
"Through their investigation they developed probable cause for the arrest of Shane Smith," said Sheriff's Deputy Craig Chamberlin.
Detectives say the 38-year-old Spokane Valley man shot Warren Flinn on Mother's Day, May 13. Flinn died at the hospital three days later.
"Depending on what the prosecutors office decides that will be the degree, either first or second-degree murder," said Chamberlin.
It was just after 2:15 p.m. when detectives executed a search warrant at the home. They pulled Smith and bags of evidence from his house in the 6700 block of Third Avenue.
"The investigators still have to process all the evidence they come up with here and basically continue building their case if this does go to trial," said Chamberlin.
If convicted detectives will then be able to focus on those killers still in hiding.
"Obviously a murder takes precedent over any other investigation they have going," said Chamberlin.
That includes the person who killed Kala Williams. Her body was also found on Mother's Day in a wooded area of Southwest Spokane.
Sharlotte McGill's killer hasn't been found. She was stabbed to death May 3 near the Spokane River at South Riverton and Magnolia.
And the longest murder investigation this year is that of Kim Schmidt. She was shot to death in her home in North Spokane. The scene was staged to look like a suicide.
Four murders this year, one that much closer to being solved.
SPOKANE, Wash. - The trial for a man accused of murder and conspiracy to commit murder in the 2007 killing of a Spokane man has ended with the judge declaring a mistrial.
Brian Moore was on trial for 1st Degree Murder and Conspiracy to Commit Murder for the death of Dale Stark. Officials say Moore conspired with his girlfriend, Shellye Stark, to shoot and kill Dale Stark in 2007.
Stark claimed it was self defense when she shot him in their South Hill home. Her self defense claim was bolstered by her revelation that she suffered years of abuse and claims that Dale had forced her into prostitution.
She was convicted of murder in 2009 but her conviction was overturned in 2011 by an appellate court ruling that found fault with jury instructions.
Stark's trial is set to begin once Moore's case has been resolved.
Early Sunday morning, May 13th, Spokane Valley Sheriff's Deputies responded to a suspicious person call near the 300 block of North Lake Road in Spokane Valley. When deputies arrived on scene, they realized 44-year-old Warren Flinn was a victim of an assault. After medics arrived on scene it was confirmed Flinn had been shot two times in the back of his head. Flinn had been in a local hospital until he subsequently died from the injuries on May 16th. Sheriff's Office Major Crimes Detectives responded to the scene on May 13th and developed information through their investigation that led to the arrest of 38-year-old Shane Smith on Tuesday, May 22nd, for the murder of Flinn. Detectives obtained a search warrant for Smith's residence that was served Tuesday afternoon, May 22nd. Smith was arrested for 2nd Degree Murder at his residence and admitted to detectives he shot Flinn in the back of the head two times. Smith told detectives he and Flinn had been out "scrapping" for metal near the railroad tracks on Lake Road. Smith said he and Flinn had an argument over cigarettes that led to him shooting Flinn in the back of the head. Detectives located two firearms inside Smith's residence along with some of Flinn's personal belongings. Shane Smith was booked into the Spokane County Jail for one count of 2nd Degree Murder.
SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) - A body found in a heavily wooded area just north of Spokane on Monday was that of the ex-convict sought in the killings of a woman and her two young sons, whose family had befriended the man and opened their home to him.
A police dog found the body of Dustin W. Gilman, 22, on a Wandermere area cliff after officers were initially led there by signals from his cell phone. Police spokeswoman Jennifer DeRuwe confirmed the body was Gilman.
Gilman's father, Larry Gilman, told police on Saturday that he'd heard a gunshot while speaking to his son on the phone and that made him believe that his son had committed suicide.
Police did not release the cause of death.
Gilman had been the subject of a manhunt since Friday's slayings of Tracy Ann Ader, 32, and her 8- and 10-year-old sons at their home, where Gilman had been staying. Ader's husband was in the hospital at the time with an unrelated illness.
No motive has been offered for the killings.
Gilman spent nine months in prison in 2009 after he was convicted of two counts of second-degree trafficking in stolen property. The Aders had befriended him and he had lived with the family for several months, officials have said. He watched the boys and attended family gatherings.
A makeshift memorial has been set up outside Ader's Spokane home.
"They were just the sweetest boys ever," Melody Ponsness, Ader's cousin, told The Spokesman-Review newspaper. "They always gave you a hug before you had to go back home. It's hard to find words. It's just so shocking."
Jennifer Joseph, 16, found August 26, 1997. Her body was found in a high state of decomposition in an out of the way rural setting. Cause of death, gunshot wound to the chest. DNA from semen found in her body was matched to Yates. A fake pearl button from the shirt that was found lodged under the seat of a Corvette formerly owned by Yates led to the suspect's arrest.
Darla Sue Scott, 29, found November 5, 1997. Her decomposed body was discovered by a man walking his dog off Hangman Valley Road. Two plastic bags were found in her shallow grave. Cause of death is two gunshots to the head. DNA from Yates was matched to semen found in her body.
Melinda L. Mercer, 24, was found December 7, 1997, on S. 50th St. in Tacoma. Four plastic bags covered her head. The cause of death is three gunshots to the head. Mercer and Connie LaFontaine Ellis were not part of the Spokane indictment. Spokane prosecutors said they will allow Pierce County authorities to proseute Yates separately for the two killings in the Tacoma area.
Shawn L. Johnson, 36, found December 18, 1997. Her decomposing remains were found off Hangman Valley Road. Two plastic bags cover her head. The cause of death is two gunshots to the head. Semen found in her body was matched to Yates' DNA.
Laurel A. Wason, 31, found December 26, 1997, in a gravel pit near the Hangman Valley Road. Three plastic bags cover her head. Cause of death, two gunshot wounds to the head. Non-indigenous vegetation, peanut shells, packing Styrofoam and chips of broken concrete were found covering her body that matched debris found in Yates' backyard. Semen found in her body was genetically matched to Yates.
Shawn A. McClenahan, 39, also found December 26, 1997, next to Laurel Wason. Like Wason three plastic bags cover her head. Cause of death, two gunshots to the head. DNA evidence from semen was matched to Yates as well as a fingerprint on one of the plastic bags. Clippings, peanuts shells, chips of broken concrete and packing Styrofoam were found covering her body that probably came from Yates' backyard. Semen found in her body genetically matched to Yates' DNA.
Sunny G. Oster, 41, found February 8, 1998. Her remains are found in a wooded area in Western Spokane County. Three plastic bags cover her head. The cause of death is two gunshots to the head. Semen found in her body was genetically matched to Yates' DNA.
Linda Maybin, 34, found April 1, 1998. Her decomposed body is found in a shallow grave 50 yards from the Wason and McClenahan crime scene. Two plastic bags cover the victim's head. Cause of death is one gunshot to the head. Semen in her body was matched to Yates' DNA. Non-indigenous plant trimmings covering her body were matched to vegetation in Yates' backyard.
Michelyn Derning, 47, was found July 7, 1998, under a hot tub cover by a transient in an area frequented by prostitutes in Spokane's East Central neighborhood. Cause of death is gunshot wound to the head. Unlike the other victims, she was seen alive a week before her body was discovered. The others were found weeks, or sometimes months, after they disappeared. Derning remains the only victim who was not raped and was not transported away from the murder scen and dumped in the outskirts of the city.
Connie LaFontaine Ellis, 35, was found October 13, 1998, in a ditch near the 1700 block of 108th Street South in Tacoma. Her decomposed body has three plastic bags covering her head. Cause of death, one gunshot wound to the head. Like Melinda L. Mercer, Yates will probably be charged with her death in Pierce County.
Melody Ann Murfin, 43, who disappeared in 1998 and was always regularly included in the Spokane Serial Killer victim list. Her body was found October 18, 2000, buried in a flower bed under the bedroom window of Yates' home. Although authorites thoroughly searched the yard after his arrest, they found Murfin's body after Yates provided them with a man pinpointing its location.
Patrick Oliver, 21, and Susan Savage, 22, crossed paths with the Yates in 1975 while they were picnicking on Mill Creek, just east of Walla Walla, and became his first known victims. Back then the soon-to-be serial killer was 23 and worked as a guard at the Washington State Penitentiary in Walla Walla. He is believed to have been hunting or target practicing when he ran into the college graduates and decided to kill them.
Stacy Elizabeth Hawn, 23, is believed to be the first prostitute killed by Yates. As part of a plea bargain to save his life Yates told investigators he killed Hawn, who was last seen alive in Seattle on July 7, 1988. Her skeletal remains were found five months later in Skagit County.
Christine L. Smith, 32, was robbed and assaulted by a man in his van on August 1, 1998. The suspect, after being unable to perform sexually, robbed her of the $40 he just paid and shot her. Smith was grazed by the gunshot to her head but managed to escape and report the attack to police. She was treated the night of the assault for an abrasion to the head, but the hospital was not even aware it was a gunshot wound. Smith contacted police again on April 18 after recognizing Yates as her attacker from a mugshot published in The Spokesman-Review. Police found blood stains, a .25-caliber bullet casing and a bullet encrusted in the roof of a van simmilar to the one described by Smith that was once owned by Yates.
SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. - A SWAT team searching for the suspect in an early Sunday morning attack that left a woman dead and her 9-year-old son on life support found him dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, authorities said.
Detectives said the body of 39-year-old Jan R. Demeerleer was located about 5 p.m. inside the garage of his eastern Washington home, according to the The Spokesman-Review.
Earlier Sunday, police warned that Demeerleer could be headed to Idaho.
The attack happened at the woman's home at around 3 a.m. Sunday, police Sgt. Dave Reagan said. Officers arrived at the home to find the woman dead and two boys -- ages 9 and 17 -- hurt.
The 17-year-old boy told police he awoke to a man slashing his neck with a knife. The teen called 911, telling the dispatcher "his stepdad had attempted to cut his throat and had killed his mom," Reagan said.
Reagan said the 9-year-old boy suffered a severe head injury. Both boys were taken to a Spokane hospital. Police said the 9-year-old has a twin brother, who was uninjured.
Detectives believe the woman died of a gunshot wound, the police statement said.
The woman had been living with Demeerleer at some point and they were engaged to be married, Reagan said. There had been some kind of dispute between the couple involving the children, he said.
The two 9-year-old boys were the woman's and Demeerleer had a 17-year-old daughter who was out of town Sunday, according to Reagan. He said the 17-year-old boy called Demeerleer his stepdad.
Murder suspect David J. Fagundes has been arrested in connection with the fatal Spokane stabbing on Sunday morning (Feb. 19). The Spokane Police Department sent out a press release to update the public on the case, and in it the revelation was made that a major arrest has been made.
Major crime detectives have reportedly booked Fagundes on a charge of 2nd degree murder at the Spokane County jail. While the investigation is still ongoing, the Spokane Police Department is not releasing the name of the victim.
As was originally reported Sunday morning, a stabbing victim was found on Third Avenue at Howard in the early morning hours. It led to an immediate investigation taking place and the area of Third Ave. was shut down from 4:50 a.m. to just about 9 a.m. No details were released at the time of the police activity, other than the fact that the victim had died from their injuries.
A fatal stabbing took place in Spokane, Wash., on the morning of Sunday, Feb. 19. Very little evidence has been released to the public at this time as the investigation is considered to be ongoing.
According to the police report that was just released, more information on the stabbing will become available as the investigation continues. The facts of the case are that a body was found in the roadway on Third Ave. at Howard on Sunday morning (Feb. 19). The victim had suffered injuries that proved to be fatal and an investigation was opened immediately.
Third Ave. was closed from 4:50 a.m. to just about 9 a.m. as the investigation was undertaken, allowing Spokane Police Major Crimes detectives to try to figure out what happened. The problem is that there is also no suspect information at this time either, giving very little for the public to go on in regard to the crime.
Stay tuned for updates to this case, as the Spokane Police Department will likely be working hard on it for the rest of the day. A working theory though, is that the crime did not take place where the body is found, likely meaning a search is underway to find the original crime scene.
