Body Branding is a form of scarification. The designs that are left are permanent and will not fade, but have to be a much less detailed design than a tattoo think before getting.

Most people who want to add art to their body will choose a tattoo. However, there are people out there who want to take things to the extreme. Some of these people will choose body branding. (be very safe about branding and cuts to the skin dangerous too.)

Once you have stopped the bleeding and cleaned the wound, you will want to prevent infections from developing. You should examine the wound carefully to ensure that secondary infection has not developed again think about it first etc.

Body branding is a way of scarification done with a third degree burn on the skin. After the burn heals, a beautiful or meaningful design of scar tissue is left behind on the skins surface. Body branding has been practiced for thousands of years, and people have been using heat and fire to modify their skin in many shapes and designs forever. These practices have been born from ritual, religion and many other reasons. Body branding has been one of the oldest body modifications on record.

Branding has made it from slavery branding to college hazing to SM practices. In modern times, the branding may stand for enduring pain or something to be respected. The mix of fire and pain are very much an experience to behold and value. Most branding is done in tattoo studios or for ritual, but with a professional. Like tattoos, branding is usually done to show ones inner self and to proclaim individuality.

Body branding is a form of scarification. The designs that are left are permanent and will not fade, but have to be a much less detailed design than a tattoo. For the branding to work, the cars must be raised scars known as keloid scars. People with a lot of melanin in their skin are easier to brand.

There are and have been several different ways to be branded along with several types of branding. You should always think about your personal requirements from this experience. Some people do this for the experience only and the scar is what’s left, others for the outcome or scar (art). It is a good idea to make sure that the person doing the branding has the same interests at heart.

The two major types of branding are “strike” and “cautery”. Strike branding is done usually for rituals and is the closest to the ancient technique. Cautery branding is done with a surgical cauterizing pen.

Strike branding is the customary method of heating one inch pieces of stainless steel that have been bent into desired shapes in a flame and then pressing it rapidly against the surface of the skin to create a burn or scar. The edge of the stainless steel is heated with a torch until it is hot enough and each individual line and curve is a separate piece of stainless steel called an "iron". Each iron is only about an inch in length to guarantee consistent contact and heat. A circle two inches around would be 4 separate strikes of the iron.

One design consists of strikes with different irons just for a second and then removed, depending on the design the next iron is heated to temperature and the method is repeated. Most strikes done well will spread to about three times their final width of the original iron. This method sometimes enables the lines to be spaced far enough apart that they can grow into a design, rather than a mound of scar tissue.

The second method of body branding is called cautery pen branding. This is done by using a cauterizing pen. This pen is like a marker with a very hot tip. With the pen you can actually draw whatever design you want and the finer lines and detail work is more present.

This pen can be used for smaller brands and for even branding into a tattoo if needed. This branding is much more like cutting than burning. A surgical cautery pen is drawn on the skin along a design. When done well, designs can be more meticulous than strike branding. There are usually no seams in alignment at first like the strike method. Both types of branding heal mostly seamless, however the cautery pen allows the lines to flow more similar to a brush stroke than an edge of stainless steel.

There are two lesser used forms of branding. One is known as laser branding, or electro cautery branding. The electro cautery branding device is sort of like an arc welder for the skin. This can be a very precise and detailed form of branding.

The fourth and even less practiced for of branding is called cold branding. It is like strike branding, but instead of heating of the steel, it is frozen to extremely cold temperatures using liquid nitrogen.

Whatever choice of body branding you decide on should be done by a professional in a sterile environment. As with all body modification you should always follow all of the after care and keep the area clean and dry. Body branding is a third degree burn and should be cared for like one. The healing process takes anywhere from two weeks to a little over a month. If you do not take care of the area branded it may end up infected and sometimes will end up in not the design that you had hoped for.

Today, body branding is growing in popularity, but the risks are great for those who do not know what they are doing. People who get branded share a unique, very intense experience. Body branding is not for everyone though.

If a tattoo is more your comfort level when it comes to body art, check out the huge gallery of tattoos over a local tattoo and not all tattoo artists are good in the business.

Branding
Human branding is one type of scarification. It is similar in nature to livestock branding.

Strike branding
This is the same process used to brand livestock.A piece of metal is heated and pressed onto the skin for the brand. However, the brand is usually done piece by piece rather than all at once. For example, to get a V-shaped brand, two lines would be burned separately by a straight piece of metal, rather than by a V-shaped piece of metal.

Cautery branding
This is a less common form of branding that uses a tool similar to a cautery-iron to cause the burns.

Laser branding
The technical term for laser branding is "electrocautery branding". The electrocautery unit is more like an arc welder for skin than a medical laser (though it is possible to use a medical laser for scarification). Electric sparks jump from the device to the skin, vaporizing the skin. This is a more precise form of scarification, because it is possible to regulate the depth and nature of the skin damage being done to it.

Cold branding
This rare method of branding is the same thing as strike branding, except that the metal branding tool is subjected to extreme cold (such as liquid nitrogen) rather than extreme heat. This method will cause the hair on the brand to grow back white and will not cause keloiding.

Cutting

Cutting of the skin for cosmetic purposes is not to be confused with self-harm, which is also referred to by the euphemism "cutting." There may be cases of self-mutilation and self-scarification for non-cosmetic reasons. Lines are cut with surgical blades. Techniques include:

Ink rubbing
tattoo ink (or another sterile coloring agent) is rubbed into a fresh cut. Most of the ink remains in the skin as the cut heals, and will have the same basic effect as a tattoo. As with tattoos, it is important not to pick the scabs as this will pull out the ink. The general public often interprets ink-rubbings as poorly done tattoos.

Skin removal/skinning
Cutting in single lines produces relatively thin scars, and skin removal is a way to get a larger area of scar tissue. The outlines of the area of skin to be removed will be cut, and then the skin to be removed will be peeled away. Scars from this method often have an inconsistent texture.

Packing
This method is uncommon in the West, but has traditionally been used in Africa. A cut is made diagonally and an inert material such as clay or ash is packed into the wound; massive hypertrophic scars are formed during healing as the wound pushes out the substance that had been inserted into the wound. Cigar ash is used in the United States for more raised and purple scars; people may also use ashes of deceased persons[citation needed].

Hatching
similar in appearance to flesh removal this method of scarification relies on using a sterile surgical scalpel to cut into the skin. Where a larger area is required to be scarred you cut with a hatching technique similar to the sketching technique. This method is easier to perform than flesh removal and can be done with one hand which could be beneficial in some situations. While this technique can take longer for larger pieces it is useful for smaller, more detailed designs and enables shading to be used

Once you have stopped the bleeding and cleaned the wound, you will want to prevent infections from developing. You should examine the wound carefully to ensure that secondary infection has not developed again think about it first etc.

Getting a tattoo is a big decision. The tattoo will remain on your body for the rest of your life. If you are thinking about getting your first tattoo, you might have a lot of questions. Here are some tattoo frequently asked questions, or tattoo FAQ, that we have compiled that hopefully will answer all your tattoo questions.

How much does it hurt to get a tattoo? This is the most frequently asked question about tattoos. And actually getting tattooed is not really too painful because modern tattoo machines move the needles through your skin pretty fast. Depending on the tattoo design, location and size, the amount of pain may vary to some extent. Usually tattooing over a bone where there is less flesh or meat hurts a little more than fleshy areas. Tattooing the outlines makes a different feeling from shading or tattooing areas of color. Most people say the outlining hurts more than the shading. Most people describe the pain of a tattoo to that of a bee sting or a bad sunburn.

Are tattoos safe to get? If you go to a tattoo studio where they use the correct tattooing machine is, getting a tattoo is very safe. Years ago there was much concern about spreading hepatitis from tattoos, this is something that all tattoo artists are very aware of these days. As long as new needles are used for each customer, there is no way of getting this disease. Many artists will be happy to set your mind at ease by opening the sterile package of needles they will be using in front of you before they start tattooing. When your tattoo is done, the artist will throw away these needles.

How much does a tattoo cost? All tattoo prices will vary based on the size and work needed. A large and more intricate tattoo will cost more than a smaller one or simpler one. To give you a good idea small or simple tattoos that are quite easy like a small ankle tattoo will usually cost about $80 when it is all finished. Prices can vary however, so the best bet is to ask first. Bring a design or describe one and most tattoo artists will be able to quote you a price right away.

Do some tattoos look bad with age? Are there any places where I should avoid getting tattooed? It is true that some areas of skin may sag in some places as you get older but this does not automatically mean that your tattoo will look bad with age. Use your common sense when choosing the area that you get the tattoo. We know basically where our skin sags as we get older so do not get a huge tattoo in these areas. Smaller tattoos are usually alright. There are several places on your body where you can get tattooed that won’t really change much over several years, like your ankle, shoulder or arms. Keep in mind that all tattoos will fade over time however, and you may want to get it re-done. Colors do tend to fade much faster than black work. UV rays from the sun or tanning bad are a tattoo’s worst enemy.

What do I do if I’m unhappy with a tattoo? Regrettably, the tattoo removal options are very limited. Depending on the tattoo, it is possible that the tattoo can be covered up and this may make the look of your tattoo better. You can look at all of the tattoo removal methods but they are very costly and painful, but the outcomes tend to be much nicer than they used to just a few years ago. The object is to make certain that you are getting the tattoo that you really want before the tattooing process starts. This is why the artist applies a stencil before they start tattooing. You will get to see what the tattoo will look like, and to fine-tune the positioning.
